About the event
This school year offers an opportunity to introduce your students to the untold stories of Black women who shaped Chicago and the world. Invite author and filmmaker Essence McDowell into your classroom for an engaging class talk that brings local history to life through rich multimedia, community-centered narratives, and inquiry-based activities that affirm students’ identities and spark curiosity.
Each class presentation draws from an original documentary, published works, and curriculum materials that examine Black women’s historical legacies and contemporary leadership in Chicago.
Students will have the opportunity to:
Learn about Black women whose contributions span local, national, and global history.
Discover Chicago landmarks and neighborhoods connected to untold histories.
Explore how digital media can preserve family, community, and personal stories.
